Research

Ongoing

Since 2020, I am working as PhD researcher within the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV) research agenda on the governance of climate change adaptation in Southeast Asia and the Caribbean.

I am focusing on the political economy of flood management in Indonesian cities. It looks at the character of local democracy and politics to explain the different outcomes of flood management as a case of the impact of climate change and local governance. We know little about the pattern of political process that shapes flood management’s success and failure. Therefore, this research focuses on how, to what extent, and under what conditions local political character contributes to flooding management in Indonesian cities. By comparing four cities – two with relatively successful interventions and two with apparently less successful ones – this project explains the variation in flood management outcomes in four Indonesian cities in coastal and inland watershed regions.
